How to compress a video for Discord, WhatsApp or e-mail
Chat apps and e-mail limit how big a video can be. Discord’s free upload limit is 10 MB, Gmail attachments stop at 25 MB, and WhatsApp re-compresses the videos you send, often making them blurry. Compressing the video yourself first puts you in control of the quality.
Step by step
- Open the video compressor.
- Drop your video in the box, or click to choose it.
- Pick a target size: 10 MB for Discord, 25 MB for e-mail, or type your own.
- Click Compress and wait. Your browser does the work, so the video is never uploaded.
- Download the new MP4 and send it.
How sharp will it look?
The size budget is spread over the whole video, so shorter videos look much sharper. For a 10 MB target, Octooly picks roughly:
| Video length | Resolution |
|---|---|
| 30 seconds | 1080p |
| 1 minute | 720p |
| 2 minutes | 480p |
| 5 minutes | 360p |
If you only need part of the video, use Trim to keep just that part. It makes a bigger difference than any setting.
Tips for WhatsApp
- WhatsApp re-compresses videos sent the normal way. If you want the receiver to get your file exactly as it is, send it as a document instead.
- Start with a target of about 15 MB. If WhatsApp still complains, try a smaller size.
Is it safe?
Yes. The compression runs inside your browser, on your own computer. Your video is never uploaded to Octooly or anyone else.
