How to convert an iPhone video to MP4
iPhones save videos as MOV files, and by default they use HEVC (H.265) compression to save space. That’s great on Apple devices, but many Windows apps, Android phones, TVs, websites and video editors can’t open them. Converting to MP4 with H.264 fixes that.
Step by step
- Copy the video from your iPhone to your computer (cable, AirDrop to a Mac, iCloud or Google Photos).
- Open the MOV to MP4 converter in Chrome or Edge.
- Drop the video in the box. MP4 is already selected.
- If the file is very big (4K videos are), set Resolution to 1080p. It still looks great on most screens and the file gets much smaller.
- Click Convert and download your MP4.
The conversion runs in your browser, so your personal videos never leave your computer.
“We couldn’t read this file”
Chrome can only decode HEVC video when your computer’s hardware supports it, which most recent PCs and Macs do. If your file won’t open:
- Try Microsoft Edge, which often has HEVC support on Windows.
- On the iPhone, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New videos will be recorded in H.264 and open everywhere, with no conversion needed (they take a bit more space).
Just need the sound?
Use the MOV to MP3 converter to keep only the audio of a video, like a talk or a rehearsal.
